In order for most wounds to heal, all you need is a bandage and a little time. However, this is not the case for approximately four million Americans who suffer from nonhealing or chronic wounds. Our Wound Center at UAMS is here to help you with the wounds that won't heal easily.

We treat a wide variety of wounds in our center, including:

Generally speaking, a wound should heal in a timely fashion using standard treatments and techniques. When it doesn't, we know from experience that there is usually an underlying cause. These causes are often straightforward and easy to deal with, such as a shoe that doesn't fit properly. But more often the cause is more complicated, such as decreased blood flow to an area caused by peripheral vascular disease/peripheral artery disease (PVD or PAD).

If left untreated, these wounds can be painful and have harmful side effects, including permanent damage and scarring. At UAMS, we don't want to simply treat your wound; we want to make sure that it heals. This goal can usually be accomplished using a "team approach," including dietitians, nurses,
physical therapists, prosthetists and doctors.

On your first visit, our caring staff will provide a comprehensive evaluation. In addition to examining your wound, we will also look at:

  • Your overall health status
  • Any medications you are taking
  • Other conditions that could be contributing to your condition

After a thorough investigation, we should have all of the information necessary to start the "healing process."

In addition, we are available to evaluate any type of chronic wounds related to other causes or medical conditions. Our expert team is led by Dr. Keith Bennett, who is board certified in general surgery, plastic surgery and family medicine. A referral to our center is not necessary, unless required by your insurance.
