Dec. 8, 2011 | UAMS Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D., hailed 15 faculty members Nov. 29 for excellence and innovation in preparing future health care professionals as he presented them teaching awards.

The only universitywide award program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the Chancellor’s Teaching Award annually recognizes faculty from each of the five colleges, the Graduate School and the Area Health Education Centers (AHECs). This year’s awards were based on contributions to education and teaching excellence during the 2010-2011 academic year.

“As a professional educator, one has the ability to extend his or her knowledge and expertise across generations,” Rahn said. “They have a professional responsibility to ensure the integrity and continuity of their professions.”

Teaching, he said, is now a more complex vocation. “Today it’s not just about having knowledge and good communications skills, you also must master new concepts and approaches such as problem-based learning and new technologies,” Rahn said, adding that through distance technology and online education, being in the same room with students is not necessarily the most important element to academic success.

Following the chancellor, each college’s dean and the leader of the AHECs introduced their teaching award recipients. Then those award recipients attending the ceremony posed for photos with their dean and the chancellor.
