Hearing loss is a problem shared by many people of all ages and is one of the most common health problems reported. Hearing loss may occur suddenly but is usually a gradual process that occurs over time. This may be hereditary, or it may be caused by physical changes within the ear due to disease, infection or injury.
Having trouble with balance or dizziness may lead to falls, which can cause serious injuries if left untreated.
Issues with hearing and balance can negatively affect your quality of life, and you don't have to learn to live with these problems.
In the ENT (ear, nose and throat) Department at UAMS, our Hearing and Balance Center has a team of specialists who treat diseases of the ear and skull base. We can help with the following issues:
Our surgeons perform otologic and neurotologic surgery, including:
- Ear tubes
- Procedures for disease of the ear, including chronic otitis media, acoustic neuroma, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, perforation of the tympanic membrane, and meniere’s disease
- Hearing restoration surgery, including cochlear implantation, brain stem implantation, and implantable hearing aids
With more than 400 major ear surgeries performed each year, our Hearing and Balance Center has one of the highest surgical volumes in the country. Innovative research and the most advanced surgical techniques are combined with excellent patient care, which results in superior outcomes along with a high level of patient satisfaction.
