Gohar Azhar, MD

Gohar Azhar M.D. is a physician-scientist at the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).  She is also an Associate Professor at the Reynolds Department of Geriatrics and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Aging Program, College of Medicine, at UAMS. Dr. Azhar earned her medical degree from Dow Medical College, Pakistan. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh.  Subsequently, she did a geriatric fellowship and trained in basic and clinical aging research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, in Boston. She is board-certified in internal medicine and geriatrics.  Prior to her appointment at UAMS, she was an Instructor at Harvard and worked as a geriatrician at community care centers in inner city, Boston. In addition to her work as a clinician, Dr. Azhar is involved in cardiovascular research at the Reynolds Institute on Aging. She is interested in discovering new genes and proteins that could help turn the older heart into a younger heart. She enjoys being a geriatrician and including the integration of technology to maintain functional independence of older individuals and their caregivers in her practice.
