Lung Cancer
 |
Did you know lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women? At UAMS, our caring and compassionate doctors offer cutting-edge medical treatment to patients who have lung cancer.
In the early stages, lung cancer usually does not cause any symptoms. By the time symptoms occur, the cancer is often advanced. Symptoms include:
- Chronic cough
- Hoarseness
- Coughing up blood
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Shortness of breath
- Fever without a known cause
- Wheezing
- Repeated cases of bronchitis or pneumonia
- Chest pain
If you have lung cancer, UAMS doctors will work with you to form a personalized treatment plan. Because we are a teaching hospital, we have many advanced therapies available at UAMS, including:
- Endobronchial Ultrasound - A minimally invasive way to stage lung cancer without surgery.
- "VATS" or Thoracoscopic Lobectomy - A minimally invasive surgical technique used to remove lung cancer without the traditional large open incisions in the chest.
- Radiofrequency Ablation - A nonsurgical technique used to destroy tumor without removing lung tissue. This procedure may benefit patients who may not otherwise tolerate surgery.
Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, but you don't have to smoke to get lung cancer. 87% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking.
Lung cancer risk increases with each year that you smoke. But if you stop smoking, the risk decreases each year. After 10 years smoke-free, the risk drops substantially. We understand that it’s hard to quit smoking, so check out our smoking cessation resources. If you quit smoking, your risk of developing other conditions such as heart disease, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis also decrease.
American Lung Association
Our multidisciplinary team of experts welcomes patients with lung cancer who may be seeking a second opinion. And we encourage patients and family members to schedule an appointment with the UAMS Lung Cancer Clinic to learn about newer, less invasive techniques for treating lung cancer.
