FAQ and DirectionsClinic FAQ and Directions

If you are having hip or knee pain and are looking for the best care, our Hip and Knee Surgery Center at UAMS provides comprehensive, personalized evaluation and treatment for patients with the most severely damaged hips and knees due to arthritis or other conditions as well as patients who want to be proactive in seeking treatment before their condition becomes more serious. Our caring staff uses state-of-the-art equipment and prostheses for total joint reconstruction and also performs many other types of procedures.

Recent major advances in artificial joints with better materials and designs have led to hip and knee replacements that allow quicker healing and now last for years longer than previous joint replacements.

At UAMS, hip and knee patients are served by renowned hip and knee surgeon Dr. Richard Evans, one of an elite group of surgeons nationally qualified to offer the very latest hip and knee surgical treatments.

Dr. Evans has been at the forefront of a movement in recent years toward minimally invasive joint replacement, even helping develop techniques
now being used across the country. Engineers are making better artificial joints, and Dr. Evans is custom-fitting those joints for patients based on the patient's size and bone type. In addition, Dr. Evans is now virtually performing each patient's surgery on a computer before he ever steps into the operating room. This helps ensure a faster, safer surgery, a quick recovery and a better long-term outcome.

Dr. Evans' reputation has drawn patients from across the country, including a 100-year-old Denver woman, who was walking the same day she received one of Dr. Evans' knee replacements. She is believed to be the oldest patient to have received a knee replacement.

The conditions treated include:
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, contenital disease and others
  • Minimally invasive surgery for partial and total joint replacement
  • Musculoskeletal and joint infection
  • Revision joint replacement
  • Work-related and traumatic joint injuries
UAMS is the only facility in Arkansas to offer bicompartmental knee resurfacing, an innovative surgical procedure that is seen as an alternative to total knee replacement. The advanced procedure provides a dual benefit for adults with arthritis who may also have knee ligament damage, often due to sports-related accidents.

The Center for Hip and Knee Surgery's specialists work closely with UAMS' physical and occupational therapists and UAMS' Institute on Aging to provide the best care and to ensure a full and rapid recovery following surgery.
