Most pregnant women are concerned about the pain associated with childbirth. After attending “natural childbirth classes,” some mothers require little or no pain medication. Other patients require anesthesia to relieve the pain of childbirth. At UAMS, we provide personalized care plans to ensure that each mother receives the appropriate treatment during delivery.

All expectant mothers are encouraged to attend a childbirth class along with a family member or friend. As you learn about the delivery process, the education provided in class will help relieve your fears and help you communicate with the UAMS medical staff members.

Just as you are unique, we will work with you to provide the appropriate pain relief based on your wishes, your tolerance for pain and your medical condition.

General anesthesia is not usually used for vaginal deliveries and is more often used for Cesarean births in emergency situations. Regional anesthesia is given in the birth canal or the lower region of the back near the spinal cord.
