The Anticoagulant, or Coumadin®, Clinic at UAMS has been offering specialized care for more than a decade. When taking an anticoagulant, you often have questions about your diet, possible side effects and how it interacts with other medications. The pharmacists at our clinic can carefully monitor how Coumadin and other anticoagulants affect you.
Coumadin is the brand name of the drug warfarin, which is an anticoagulant, more commonly known as a blood thinner. Blood thinners act to prevent your blood from clotting as fast as it normally would or helps if you already have blood clots. The medicine requires close monitoring to ensure that you are taking the right amount for your individual condition.
The Anticoagulant/Coumadin Clinic at UAMS was developed by a pharmacist as a pharmacist-run clinic to help doctors take care of you. The clinic sees patients who are taking warfarin and need to be checked on at least every four weeks. Staff members will check your INR (international normalized ratio), which helps to examine the impact of the medication.
Pharmacists work to determine whether you are taking other medications that may interact with the drug or whether your diet has changed, which could affect how the medication works.
Our caring and compassionate staff also helps to minimize your risk for side effects such as:
- Skin changes or discoloration
- Easy bruising or bleeding that will not stop
- Pain in stomach, back or sides
- Nosebleeds
- Feeling weak or light-headed
- Problems with vision, speech or balance
Our Coumadin Clinic takes referrals from any UAMS doctor. At the appointment, you will be promptly tested, usually by a finger stick method. Then, your medication will be adjusted as necessary. The process generally takes about 15 minutes.
