Area Health Education Centers
The UAMS Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program was founded in 1973, through the combined efforts of the Governor, the State Legislature, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), as the primary educational outreach effort of UAMS and the principal means of decentralizing medical and other health professions education throughout the state.
There are 8 major teaching centers located in El Dorado, Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Helena, Jonesboro, Pine Bluff, Texarkana and Batesville/Mountain Home, with satellites located in Harrison, West Memphis and Lake Village. These centers serve as training sites for students in the fields of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and various allied health professions, as well as for residents specializing in family medicine.
As the AHEC Program has grown, so has our mission to provide primary care and preventive services to underserved patients in rural areas of the state, outreach to the community through numerous programs, recruit junior and high school students to the health professions, and conduct research and improve the quality of care that we deliver.
The AHEC training approach emphasizes primary care, which covers general health education and basic medical care for the whole family. All of our AHEC clinics now have electronic medical records and we are moving to establish the patient center medical home model of care.
How You Can Help
Your donations help establish stable funding for AHEC, making certain that the healthcare needs of our community will always be met and allow us to develop new programs to better meet the needs of rural Arkansans.
Imagine the future of healthcare and join us in our campaign to ensure a healthier future for Arkansans. A significant portion of our campaign, Campaign Imagine, will be designated to fund critical initiatives within the AHEC program.
