UAMS Medical Center’s kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant program started dates back to 1964, when the first kidney transplant in Arkansas was performed here by Dr. Masuki Hara under the transplant program developed by Dr. William J. "Pat" Flanigin.
Today the kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant staff includes:
- Gary Barone, M.D., a transplant surgeon, is the chief for the Division of Transplantation at UAMS. He is fellowship trained in transplant and vascular surgery and has been named to the Best Doctors in Arkansas list of the Arkansas Times every year since 2005. He also has been named to the Best Doctors in America list. He joined the UAMS staff in 1988.
- Transplant surgeons Youmin Wu, M.D., and Frederick Bentley, M.D., who perform both liver and kidney transplants.
- Sameh Abul-ezz, M.D., a board-certified and fellowship-trained transplant nephrologist, who serves as medical director for the kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant program. He joined the UAMS staff in 1994.
- Sundararaman Swaminathan, M.D., is a board-
- certified and fellowship trained nephrologist. He joined the UAMS staff in 2006.
