Clinic FAQ

Having a baby should be a joyous occasion. But more often than not, stress, doubt, fear and anxiety are mixed up with that joy. It's nice to know that if these negative feelings
start to crowd out the joy, the experts at UAMS can help you navigate the emotional roller coaster of pregnancy.

Very few OB/GYN clinics across the U.S. can offer the benefits found at UAMS. Our OB/GYN department has a clinical psychologist permanently on staff.
Joseph Banken, Ph.D., specializes in the emotional needs of women going through:

Finding out you are pregnant is stressful enough without worrying about what your drug prescription for a preexisting mental condition might do to your baby. Working closely
with your obstetrical team (OB), we can help you manage both your illness and your pregnancy.

Have you just been told that you're having twins? Triplets? Has your doctor suggested genetic testing? High-risk pregnancies bring their very own set of concerns.
Dr. Banken works very closely with your doctors, genetics counselors and you to help you understand what is happening now, what may happen in the future and how to cope with these events.

We understand that many women experience these issues, but you may be concerned about coming to a mental health clinic. Knowing that you're under a lot of stress, we want to make it easy for you to ask for help. At UAMS, we protect your privacy while providing treatment in a comfortable environment. Our doctor sees patients in the same clinic you visit for your obstetrics or gynecology (OB/GYN) visit, so there is no need for you to go to an office that is not familiar to you.

Our doctor can also see patients in other locations in Arkansas by using telemedicine equipment. Women with high-risk pregnancies come to UAMS from all over Arkansas to see our Maternal-Fetal Medicine experts. When advanced pregnancy makes traveling difficult, our doctor can talk with you face-to-face over our live video system at Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Arkansas. This is a completely confidential and secure way to keep your appointment without the risks of extensive travel.

From answering questions to arranging emergency transport across the state, our
pregnancy call center is staffed by triage nurses who are here for you around the clock, 24/7 to answer all of your women's health concerns. Our ANGELS program also sets up telemedicine appointments with our doctor. In addition, ANGELS will find the closest Area Health Education Center to you, set up the appointment and make sure someone is there to greet you when you arrive.
