If you or your physician are concerned about osteoporosis and bone loss, a bone mineral density (BMD) test is the key to early diagnosis and care. The bone density test is safe, painless and takes just 45 minutes. You do not need to do anything special to prepare for it.
Our specially trained technicians will perform your bone density test using the most advanced imaging equipment available today – dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The imaging machine will scan your spine from in front to the back as well as through the side. It also will scan your hip and forearm. The test uses less than 1/25th of the radiation from a chest X-ray.
UAMS endocrinologists specializing in disorders of bone metabolism will carefully analyze the results to determine how dense your bones are. The less dense they are, the greater your risk of bone fracture. The doctor will compare your bone density results to two norms. The first is a healthy young adult with peak bone mass. This is called your "T score." The second is an age-matched comparison called a "Z Score." Your doctor will explain whether your results indicate normal bone density, low bone density (osteopenia) or osteoporosis, and will work with you to coordinate the very best in follow-up care.
