Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute

Are you searching for a comprehensive research, education and clinical care facility that offers the most innovative and state-of-the-art spine-related services all under one roof? Look no further than our UAMS Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute.

The institute's 12-story building, named for philanthropist Jack Stephens of Little Rock whose gift made this center possible, is home to our Center for the Athletic and Aging Spine, University Rehabilitation, and the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery of the UAMS College of Medicine. Several specialty neuroscience programs and the world-renowned Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy are also housed here.

The Center for the Athletic and Aging Spine has several unique features to make treatment and therapy here the best in the region, including a therapeutic whirlpool and water therapy pool that prove invaluable to improving a patient's mobility and strength.

Our multidisciplinary team cares for patients with spine problems and includes:

  • A surgical spine specialist
  • A nonsurgical spine specialist
  • The spine physiatrist (a rehabilitation physician who deals with problems of the spine)
  • The pain management specialist
  • A psychiatrist
  • A psychologist
  • Special nurses attuned to afflictions of the spine
  • Pharmacologists
  • The geriatric physician
  • Physical therapists
We also offer full service for physical and occupational therapy, hand therapy, speech therapy and physical fitness. And our center also provides "prehabilitation," where patients who need to have surgery can undergo a pre-operative program of exercise, reconditioning and diet to make their surgical outcome more successful.
